Helping youth tell their own stories

Challenge

At Rêve Academy, my first order of business was to better represent our students’ voices. I wanted their challenges, successes, talent, and personality to be an indelible part of the Rêve brand. Otherwise, our claims of being a student-centered organization would fall flat.

Results

Students shared their dreams with me through interviews and casual conversations. By adding images I had captured throughout their internships, I built 30+ engaging profiles. These stories helped students recognize how much they had accomplished in their short time with us. They also helped us connect to donors and advocates through the power of emotion.

Anthony used his big personality to uplift the team
I definitely try to help people break out of their shell. With some of my teammates, I would see them get tense so I would try my best to talk them through it and show them that this is a growing moment. I’m not a shy person, so when other people are shy, I try to encourage them to make sure we’re on the same page. I just want to have a lasting impact wherever I go. It doesn’t matter if I’m a construction worker, working in video games, if I’m a YouTuber. I want to leave a legacy. Keep reading >

Khem was inspired to do more good
When I came here, I looked at the 3D printer and thought, ‘What is this?’ I had never seen that before. Then later I learned it all. I was trying to find one person who could help me, and now I found many people. I was trying to find a job, and I got a really good opportunity. When I come here, I feel happy. I feel powerful and strong. I don’t know about the future right now, but I just want to help people around the world by doing good things. Keep reading >

Shakhila embodied the spirit of collaboration
This experience made me think, ‘Wow, collaborating with people is cool.’ You can’t just shut people out and and say, ‘I don’t care what you’re saying.’ You really have to be open and listen. You don’t get much of that at school. People complain about group projects in school because their teammates are slacking, but I feel like at Rêve Academy, the energy in the room is so enthusiastic that people are willing to stay on task. They’re really passionate about what they’re doing. Keep reading >

Hollis discovered her ability to lead
Coming to Rêve Academy was an accident—I was supposed to intern at another company, but at the last minute they backed out, so I was placed here. I love it. It’s nothing like I thought it was going to be. That first summer, what really struck me was how open the environment was and how collaborative everyone was. Working my way through being an intern and then a senior intern, I feel like my skills have really built up. Keep reading >
